Heat, Drought and the Wet Winter That Follows
Woodland Hills runs hotter and drier than anywhere else we work in the Valley, and that cycle is written into the walls. On the slopes below Calabasas Peak and the streets rising toward Topanga Canyon Boulevard, the ground bakes and shrinks through a long summer, then takes intense rain in a handful of winter storms.
That swing does two things to a wall. It opens shrinkage cracks in the soil behind it, which become direct conduits for the first heavy rain straight down to the footing. And it moves expansive material through a wider range each year than the same soil would in a cooler part of the county. Walls here age faster than their equivalents ten miles east, and the failures are usually quick rather than gradual.
What We Look For on a Woodland Hills Wall
- Sudden movement after a first storm. Not gradual creep. Shrinkage cracks deliver water straight to the base, and the wall goes in one wet week.
- Cracks opening in the soil above the wall. A summer symptom that predicts a winter problem, and the cheapest moment to intervene.
- Undermining at the toe. Water reaching the footing and taking material out from under it.
- Burned slope above the property. Changes both how much water arrives and what comes with it.
- Rotation with the top pushed out. Overturning under a load that arrived quickly rather than built slowly.
What Is Actually Causing It
The seasonal extreme is the cause behind the cause. Drought cracking gives the water a route, the intensity of the rain gives it volume, and a wall built without drainage has no answer to either. On properties below burned slopes the load includes material as well as water, which is a different problem again.
How We Repair Walls in Woodland Hills
Deal with the ground above the wall, not just the wall.
Sealing and planting the surface cuts off the route water is using.
Retrofit drainage sized for the storm.
Not the annual average — the peak, which is what actually arrives here.
Rebuild the toe where it has been undermined.
Often the real damage, and invisible from above.
Assess debris exposure separately.
Where a burned slope sits above the property, that is its own scope and not something a garden wall addresses.
Assessment Before Anything Else
Every Woodland Hills repair starts with working out which of those causes you actually have, because the wrong diagnosis is how people spend a great deal of money without fixing anything. The visit is free, you get an itemised written scope, and if a repair will hold we say so — and if it will not, we say that too. Permits, where the work needs them, go to LADBS.
Retaining Wall Repair FAQ's for Woodland Hills
My wall was fine for years, then moved in one winter. Why?
Because the summer opened cracks in the soil that delivered the first heavy rain straight to the footing. In this part of the Valley that is the usual sequence — not slow creep, but a fast failure after a long dry spell.
There's a burned slope above my house. Does my wall protect me?
No, and this matters. A retaining wall is designed for static soil pressure, not impact from a moving debris flow. If that is the risk, it needs a purpose-built structure and we will say so plainly rather than sell you a wall.
Should I do anything in summer?
Yes — summer is the cheap moment. Sealing the soil surface and establishing planting above the wall closes the route the water will use in December.
What is undermining and how would I spot it?
Water washing material out from under the footing. From above you may see nothing; from the front you sometimes see a gap or exposed footing at the base of the wall.
Is block or concrete better here?
Concrete is more rigid and less forgiving of movement; block flexes. On this ground the decision usually comes down to how much room there is behind the wall for reinforcement.
